Why Should We Sleep More?

Sleeping is one of the most important activities we engage in our daily lives. So why wouldn't we get more sleep? It is recommended that adults get 8-9 hours of sleep a night and yet the average Americans gets 6.8 hours of sleep a night. Now you may be asking yourself, "what are the benefits of getting a full 8 hours of sleep?" The number of things one gains from simply getting enough sleep is simply astonishing. However, the top 3 benefits of getting enough sleep include and are not limited to boosting your immune system, maintaining a healthy weight, and improving your memory.

Sleeping is arguably the most important event the human body engages in. We can improve ourselves so much just from simply getting 8 hours of sleep that there is no reason not to! According to a study done by Oxford, when 164 people were exposed to the common cold, the more sleep an individual gets the faster they recovered from this illness. On top of this, the individuals who averaged less than 5 hours of sleep were twice as likely to contract the illness! This study is irrefutable evidence that our sleep has a physical impact on our health.

Overall, sleep is the most important event that us humans engage in, and we should make an effort to get 8-9 hours of sleep every night. Moreover, sleeping has been proven to increase our immune system as previously stated.

  3. I am a psychology major so you best believe that I have learned ALL about sleep. The first thing that I have to say is that you could not be more spot on with your facts. Sleep is one of those things that everyone loves but is still somehow underrated. The fact about how people are twice as more likely to contract illness when only getting 5 hours of sleep is astounding. A fun fact that I have learned is that no one has ever actually died from sleep. However, the longest time someone has gone without sleep was 11 days!
