In What Ways Does The Allstate Ads Use Rhetoric To Promote Sells? (Blog #5)

How does this following ad use rhetoric to promote sells? It appears to use a variety of methods to build one complete ad that is extremely humorous and situational. However, this ad is using this situational nightmare as the basis for their ad. This is clearly because this is something that is possible and is something that could potentially financially destroy someone. While it is unlikely that this could happen, but the fact that it could happen is enough of a basis for someone to want to be insured over this. This is where they outshine their competition. This ad uses the personification of mayhem and an extremely unlikely but plausible situations to sell their services.

The main character in this ad is the literal personification of mayhem and in the Allstate ads he causes these extremely disastrous situations. Shortly after these disasters they say, "if you have the wrong the wrong insurance coverage this could leave a mark". This is their main selling point, and this is where they outshine their competition. Furthermore, at the end of the ad he says, "be better protected from mayhem, like me". Not only is this irrefutable evidence that this character is the personification of mayhem, but it also proves that this is what Allstate is trying to protect you against. Moreover, in this ad we can assume that the room that he is in is very possibly one of a teenage girl. Seeing as he is doing something that most teenage girls do, and the room he is in is most likely a girls because of the makeup brushes on the counter. Therefore, if you have a teenage daughter this is something that very well could happen, and as previously stated, that "could" is enough of a reason to be protected. These are the main selling points of this advertisements.

Overall, this ad uses a unique combination of rhetorical devices to sell their product. We can also conclude that this ad uses the personification of mayhem as their antagonist, and that this "mayhem" is ultimately what their services protect you from. Moreover, we can also conclude that this ad uses an unlikely but plausible scenario to make us question whether our insurance protects us from this possibly catastrophic event. Meanwhile, it uses humor to convey this message in a more perceivable and jokingly way. All in all, I found this ad to be very funny and very successful at selling their product.

  1. Good considerations about the personification of Mayhem in the main character. Push yourself to pull out specific evidence from the ad to analyze: quotes, the setting, the larger context of the issue at hand (influencers/beauty blogging), and really dig deep into your analysis.
